Sopes
Sopes are a traditional Mexican antojito made with thick hand-pressed masa topped with refried beans, meats, fresh vegetables, cheese, and salsa. Known for their pinched edges and hearty texture, sopes are a staple of Mexican street food and home cooking, offering the perfect balance of crispness and softness in every bite.
Serve them as a snack, appetizer, or full meal, sopes are easy to customize and full of rich, comforting flavor inspired by traditional Mexican cooking.
Servings: 12 Sopes
Ingredients:
Sopes:
3 cups masa flour
1 tablespoon salt
2 cups warm water (or as needed)
1 qt oil for frying
Toppings:
Cilantro (Chopped
Onion (Chopped)
8 oz Refried beans
½ cup Cotija Cheese
Your choice of protein (chorizo, steak, chicken, veggies)
Sabor a Mexico Salsa (your choice)
Instructions:
Whisk masa flour and salt together in a bowl. Add enough water until dough is smooth and holds together.
Form dough into 2 inch balls, place between two pieces of parchment paper and flatten into a ½ inch circle. Tip: Use a cutting board to flatten dough balls.
Add frying oil to large sauce pan and heat to 400°F.
Fry a few sopes at a time until lightly browned, about 30 seconds per side. Using tongs, transfer sopes to a paper towel lined baking sheet and let cool until they can be handled, 2-3 minutes. Using your fingers, pinch the edges of each sope all the way around.
Return sopes to the hot oil and fry until golden and cooke through, 1-2 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
Top each sope with refried beans, the protein of your choice, queso Cotija, cilantro, onions and your favorite Sabor a Mexico Salsa.
